2013-2014 Summary of Ceramics

Description

Heyo~~ I take it that most of you don't know, but I actually study ceramics at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. I don't really post any of my traditional work on dA, but I thought, what the heck. Why not? It's technically a part of my New Year's resolution to try to bring more personality into my online presence, and since dA is such a huge community in which I found many of my friends, I thought I'd get a little personal. ;3 Anyway, this is just a small collection of some of the things I made at ECUAD. If you are interested to see more, they are casually posted on my tumblr @ reincarnationz, under the ceramics tag which you can find on the top of the navigation. I'll try to make the blurbs below fun to read, and a little educational. I don't often get to talk about my practice, so this will be interesting~

Column One:
Mutably was made in my first year at ECUAD, and it was my first time slip-casting. Slip casting is a ceramic technique in which you pour "slip" (think of it as a liquid form of clay) into a plaster mold and produce forms from. It's the main concept behind mass-production functional-ware such as the zillions of industrial coffee mugs you can find just about anywhere to IKEA bowls and vases, haha. There's quite a bit of conceptual ideas behind it, but I'll spare you the details, haha~ If you're curious to know, just comment below or send me a note and I'll happily discuss it~

I have a better background in the technical side of creating ceramics, more so than artsy conceptual stuff. So making cocoa jar and cups was more of a fun project than anything else. The forms are thrown on the wheel (that spinning thing that everyone refers back to from the movie Ghost for...) and the details on the surface is made from thin slabs and coils; the coils were blended into the form as the cloud so you can't see the original "coils" anymore, hehe. It's decorated with underglaze (painting pigments for ceramics) and a clear glaze. For fellow learning ceramacists: make sure the walls are thick enough to contain hot drinks without the heat permeating through a thin wall of a cup. orz;;

Column Two:
Bottled Up was quite a bit of a learning curve and a project that took me forever to finish. The great thing about this project is though is that I had room for error as the form was slip-casted (again, I was easily able to make multiples of these forms because it was slip-casted and not wheel-thrown) so whenever I accidentally made my cut go too far, I just dumped it. (It broke my heart to "waste" money, but ceramics is tough love. :T) It also took a long time to figure out how much I can cut away at before the form became unstable. In the inside, I also added butterfly forms "flying around" inside that was very delicate to handle. I worried so much that the firing process would make them all come apart inside, haha... Ha-- The butterfly forms are created from a press-mold (similar concept to slip-casting, but instead of pouring slip, you can simply use clay to press into a negative of a form to get a positive).

Grotesque Movement was my attempt to try to be less rigid with my work. Again, as you can see from the majority of this collection is that I'm very into concrete planning and smooth, simple forms. So this project was to try to get away from that mindset and explore something different. And honestly, it rejuvenated my love for clay and reminded me why I fell in love with the material so much. It allowed me to get back to the basics and feel the clay and work on it viscerally instead of using my head to overwork my obsessive compulsive tendencies, lol. I also tried out a new glaze a senior was kind enough to let me use. <3

Column Three:
The plate and set of mugs were wheel thrown. There isn't much to say for these, haha~ Oh, for the plate the design uses underglaze and for the mugs the design is made with decals. Ceramic decals kind of work like temporary tattoos (the application process of it anyway) and are actually printed with a printer! Of course, a specific "ink" is required for printing decals and it has complications with proper colours. For example, the decals are printed black but by the end of the firing process, turn out to be a sepia colour. You can imagine how coloured decals would change, heh. But it's a very easy way (and relatively inexpensive if only printing the basic 'black' decals) to be able to transfer images and logos onto ceramic-ware.

Column Four:
The small bowl is slip-casted (hence the warping) and decorated with underglaze. The lidded container is also decorated with underglaze and has a Bathroom White glaze with speckles. o u o
